He was a French naval officer, colonizer, and navigator of what would become the South Eastern United States. He was one of the famous personalities at that time and he was a major figure in the French attempts to colonize Florida. He took over command of the French Colony of Fort Caroline in what is now Jacksonville Florida and he and his many followers were massacred by Spanish soldiers near St Augustine. He was born in 1520 in Dieppe, Kingdom of France and he died on October 12, 1565. He was a French person but he died in the Saint Augustine Florida area.
